Coalition

who we are

Michigan Microplastics Coalition is a group of concerned individuals and organizations addressing microplastics in the Great Lakes region as an emerging water quality pollutant. Our mission is to stop the introduction of plastics and microplastics from entering the Great Lakes in order to protect environmental and human health.

why we care

Microplastics pose a threat to human health and the environment. They have been found in the ocean, Great Lakes, bellies of wildlife, along with human organs such as the brain, heart and lungs. They are made with endocrine disrupting chemicals (bisphenols, phthalates, etc.) that act like a chemical sponge, soaking up other pollutants from the water around them. At the same time, they are negatively impacting the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the Great Lakes.

In order to protect the health of Michiganders, Great Lakes enthusiasts and the greatest source of freshwater drinking water in the world, we must act now.
